Factors Influencing Acute Postoperative Urinary Retention in Patients Undergoing Inguinal Herniorrhapy

Abstract
We retrospectively studied 83 patients who had undergone inguinal herniorrhaphy to assess factors influencing the incidence of acute postoperative urinary retention. The age, sex, amount of fluid adminstered perioperatively, type of operation and
type
of anesthesia were taken into acount for variables and analyzed. Multivariate anaysis using stepwise discriminant analysis revealed that the amount of fluid adminstered, age, and type of anesthesia had significantly and independently associated
with
postopeative urinary retention. But the variable of the amount of fluid was much greater than the other two variables in the relative significance of discriminating power. There results, together with the results of our previous study with
patients
undergoing benign anorectal surgery, informed us that restriction of fluid perioperatively had uttermost importance for reducing the incidence of acute postoperative urinary retention and other factors were only minor variable.
